ONE MILLION STAR SERVICE!! Sonia our saviour! My grandmother suffered a brain haemorrhage whilst on holiday in Malaga. As a family, we flew out there and were organising private medical repatriation back to the UK as we felt very let down by that particular hospital in Spain in every aspect, and my grandmother was very disorientated and distressed and was not able to communicate with the staff. We thought we were going to lose her. Due to the logistics required of the medical repatriation and organising this ourselves, plus the language barrier (no one in the hospital spoke English and although I have basic Spanish, what we needed was absolute fluency due to the medical terminologies), we desperately sought out an interpreter to utilise for on-demand purposes whom we could call on an urgent basis as and when needed (ie if the doctor or nurse suddenly appeared and we needed to communicate with them there and then before they disappeared!). I messaged this company at 7.30am and by 8.30am I had a reply and was put in touch with the amazing Sonia. I don’t think there are enough words in the dictionary to explain what Sonia did for us and our appreciation for her. Without her, my nan wouldn’t currently be lying in a specialist neurology hospital in the UK right now, ready to have the investigations and interventions that she requires. We have hope back now, where hope was completely lost before. I lost count how many times I called her over the 3 day period when we urgently needed her at that exact moment, and she answered every single time without fail. She was essentially on call for us and dropped whatever she was doing in that moment to answer my call. Despite her probably having a million other things to do, I never felt rushed in our calls and she was the reliability that we so desperately needed. She had explained that the company’s interpreter service is usually something that’s booked in advance so our specific need was a little more unique and not their usual service. As such, Sonia’s urgent/last minute help was more on a personal basis of one human being helping another human being in need, purely out of the kindness of her heart. Even making herself available outside of her working hours given the uniqueness and urgency of the situation, which she absolutely did not need to do at all, but simply because she genuinely wanted to help us, and we really did believe the sincerity when she said that because her actions matched her words. She even went as far as to type out lengthy messages in Spanish (with the English translations alongside it) for us to physically show the staff, just in case she wasn’t able to answer the phone (which she always did anyway!), knowing the urgency and time sensitivity of the things we needed to sort to get her on that medical plane back to the UK. It was a high pressure situation, lots of stress and emotion but Sonia was so calm, kind and reassuring, and she immediately put me at ease with her assistance and caring nature. Sonia’s assistance was the definition of going absolutely above and beyond - she was far more than just an interpreter for me. She is literally our angel, and I must admit I have tears in my eyes even typing this. Sonia - your genuine care, kindness and selflessness has restored our faith in humanity. A million thank yous!
